OOW 2013 part I: Gearing up for mobile

The first two days of Oracle Open World 2013 are already gone, so time for a small wrap up regarding Oracle Middleware. OFMW 12c will be improved on three key aspects: mobile, cloud and business empowerment. I will focus now on mobile, because  the mobile aspect was a returning subject in several sessions.

OFMW will contain a Mobile Development Framework. If this is more than a re-branding of the already available ADF Mobile framework was not completely clear. What is clear is that the framework will allow you to build your mobile application once, and run it on its own native container on iOS or Android. These apps can also work off-line, utilizing an encrypted SQLite database.

Within ADF and the SOA Suite we see REST being supported using the REST Adapter by directly expose a reference service in your composite as REST  (the OSB was of course already REST capable).  The ever popular JSON standard is also going to be supported out of the box, enabling clean interfaces to be created without the bulky XML SOAP messages –something that is more or less becoming standard in the mobile world. This, together with the fact that OWSM can secure REST services since patch set 6, creates a solid platform capable for serving mobile.

The WebLogic Server that will form the basis for the Fusion Middleware (from 12.1.4) will support Java EE 7, including all tthose nifty technologies like web sockets and will be geared towards HTML5. (Although web sockets will be available from 12.1.3).

All in all Oracle Fusion Middleware 12c will be ready for the new era where mobile device and tablets will outsell PCs.
